6 Ways To Get The Most Out Of Essential Oils

I love using essential oils.
I used to think of them as something that scented perfumes or air fresheners, but now I know they are much more than that.
I love having a different oil to put in my diffuser for each mood I go through. I love using Peppermint oil as a natural way to settle my stomach. And I love occasionally smelling like an herb farm when I put oils on my skin. (I’ve also been told I smell like pasta when I use Oregano and Thyme on my feet.)
But I didn’t always love and use oils this much. I had a few bottles of essential oils that sat in my cupboard for years. Finding the best way to use oils in my daily life was definitely a learning process.
Now that I’ve gone through my own learning curve, I can share my top 6 ways for you to get the most out of essential oils.
#1- Use Them Daily
This is seriously the best way to get the most out of essential oils. There are many benefits of using oils, but they only really happen with daily and consistent use.
Essential oils can be pretty expensive depending on what kind of oil it is. So it’s no surprise that we might feel like we need to save them for a special occasion or make them last longer.
But that bottle of oil isn’t doing any good in the cupboard. I’ve heard many stories (including mine) of how much essential oils have helped improve overall wellness. And in every case, the people in the stories used the oils every single day.
Using essential oils is a lot like using herbs to benefit health. They need to be used consistently over a period of time to make the most difference.
#2- Do Your Research
There are a lot of different essential oils out there.
Using essential oils daily is great. But it gets even better when you do some research and start using the oils that will help you the most– and in the way that works best for you.
There are essential oils that will help improve the appearance of your skin, some that will lift your mood, and more that support other body systems. A little research into which oils do what can help you make the most of using them.
#3- Listen to Your Body
While I usually do some research before trying out a new oil, I always pay attention to how my body reacts. There’s really no substitute for learning to listen to your body to know if something is working (or not).
For example, there are many different essential oils that can promote a feeling of calm and improve sleep. But not all of them will work that way for everyone. It takes some experimenting to learn which oils will help you the most.
It’s important not to get discouraged if the first oil you try doesn’t give the result you were looking for.
Starting to develop an intuition and learning to pay attention to whether or not your body ‘likes’ a specific oil can help you get the most out of using essential oils.

#4- Live Healthy
With all the excitement currently surrounding essential oils, it’s easy to start thinking of them as ‘magic’ oils. (And sometimes when I’m having a bad day and I smell citrus oil, it does feel like magic!)
But starting to use essential oils regularly is not a replacement for a healthy lifestyle. Kind of like taking a multivitamin isn’t going to negate the effects of constantly eating junk food.
Essential oils can benefit anyone- no matter what kind of lifestyle they live. But to get the most out of them, you really need to combine their power with the power of an already healthy lifestyle.
#5- Use Them to Replace Toxins
If you want to live a healthier lifestyle, I really think that essential oils are one of the best ways to replace toxins in our everyday lives. There are so many different uses for essential oils, and any way you use them will bring something all-natural into your home.
Diffusers can be a replacement for candles that have synthetic fragrances or other questionable ingredients. Essential oils can be used in many personal care products– shampoos, lotions, deodorants- to replace toxic ingredients.
The toxins present in our home environments have a big impact on our health. Using the all-natural power of essential oils to get rid of some of these toxins is really getting the most out of them.
#6- Be Fearless
There are really two ways to approach essential oils: being a little nervous and cautious about using them or jumping right in. I’ve actually gone about it both ways.
The first few bottles of essential oils I got sat in the cupboard for a while. I wasn’t exactly sure how to use them. I thought they could be useful someday, but I didn’t want to use them the ‘wrong’ way.
My second round with oils was completely different. I diffused them, put them on my skin, and used them internally every day. I did my research first, but then I started using them as much as I could.
Guess which way worked better.
Now, I’m not saying you should leave common sense behind. Essential oils are powerful and should be used with respect and attention to safety.
But overall, be fearless. The people who go all in are the ones who usually find the most benefit.
Start Getting the Most Out of Essential Oils
Essential oils are great just on their own. But, one more time, here are my key ways to get the most out of them:
- Use the oils daily! They aren’t doing any good staying in the bottle.
- Do your research. Take a little time to research the best oils for your needs.
- Listen to your body. Discover which oils are the best for you by how your body reacts.
- Use oils to complement an already healthy lifestyle for more powerful results.
- Replace toxins in your home with essential oils.
- Be fearless! Go all in on oils for a few months and see what result you get.
