Oils & Freedom Part 1: Start Living Toxin-Free With Essential Oils!

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of essential oils? For me it’s one word: Freedom.
That might not be a word you would associate with something that comes in a bottle and is diffused or applied to your skin.
But in these series called Oils & Freedom, I’m going to be going through a series of posts on why I believe oils are related to freedom and how you can discover that freedom for yourself.
Because it is about freedom. Freedom from toxins that harm your health. Freedom to discover wellness and a better quality of life. Freedom to stop surviving and start thriving.
This is Part 1: how to experience toxin-free living with essential oils. Let’s get started!
What Are Toxins?
A ‘toxin’ can be practically anything that is harmful to your health, and usually it’s something you can’t see and don’t know is hurting you.
Unfortunately, we are finding out more and more just how many toxins are hiding in our homes, products, and environments. From pesticide residues on food to cancer causing chemicals in personal care products to asthma inducing ingredients in household cleaners, we are surrounded! (1)(2)
I’ve heard some different statistics on this, but the latest one seems to be that women will apply around 300 chemicals on average each day. Many of them are hidden in makeup, skincare products, and cleaners.
I don’t know about you, but the more research I do on this, the more I believe there’s a better way. And that better way can be using essential oils to replace toxic chemicals.
Why Essential Oils?
So what do essential oils have to do with toxin-free living?
There are many reasons I believe essential oils are the way to a less toxic life, but here are the main ones:
First, when you get quality essential oils (the real, 100% pure kind), you are getting a super-powered bottle of all the essential compounds found in the plant it came from. And it’s just one ingredient (unless it’s a blend). No toxins.
Also, essential oils are so easy to use! One of the struggles for me with toxin-free living is the amount of time and effort it can take to replace all the chemicals or make my own products. One drop of essential oil can do a lot of that for me.
And finally, they work. That doesn’t mean other natural ways of living don’t work. I still use herbal remedies and buy natural products. But none of these work as well for me as essential oils at replacing toxins in my home and kicking toxins out of my body.
For me, toxin-free living = essential oils. It’s that simple.

The Magic Of A Diffuser & Aromatherapy
Time to get practical. What are some ways you can use essential oils to go toxin-free in your own life?
One of the best places to start is with a diffuser. Running a diffuser is a great way to make your home smell good without using air fresheners (or even candles) that may have synthetic ingredients and chemicals.
The quality of the air you are breathing in is very important to your health.
Depending on which oils you use, a diffuser can also help to purify the air and get rid of unwanted odors. Peppermint, Tea Tree, Lemongrass, and Oregano can all help with this.
Aromatherapy can also make a huge difference to your quality of life.
We often don’t deal with stress in healthy ways. When our emotions are out of balance or we feel overwhelmed, we usually try to cover up the emotions with something else.
Using essential oils aromatically is a healthy way to balance emotions and reduce feelings of stress.
Aromatherapy sounds like a fancy word, but to me it just means improving my emotional state naturally through the fragrance of oils.
This can be as simple as running your diffuser with oils that help with stress and emotions (think Frankincense, Lavender, Cedarwood, and citrus oils). Or you can keep a bottle of essential oil on hand (Orange, for example), and inhale directly from the bottle to de-stress.
Replacing Toxins For Your Skin
Everything we put on our skin gets absorbed to some degree. This is one of the major ways toxins start accumulating in our bodies because they are found in things we put on our skin everyday: makeup, shampoo, lotion, cleaning products, etc.
Essential oils can be used to replace these toxins in two main ways.
The first way is to use essential oils and other natural ingredients to make your own household and personal care products. Think cleaners, lotion, soap, face wash, makeup remover, and so on.
To be honest, I’m not much of a DIY person. Most of the time, I’d rather have someone else do it and save me the time.
But even I find that just using a carrier oil and a specific essential oil or blend is good for many different things. (For example, Peppermint + carrier oil = a good way to cool down muscles.)
And if you are a DIY person, this is for you!! Essential oils and Google can get you a long way towards living toxin-free. There are many recipes out there to replace chemical-filled products.
The second way (and the one I use most often) is to add essential oils into natural products for added benefits.
So for example, instead of buying an expensive face lotion that may ‘help’ my skin with chemicals, I add different essential oils into the all-natural face lotion I already have.
The hardest part is finding out which method works best for you, then running with it!

Getting Toxins Out Of Your Body
One of the main ways I’ve found freedom with essential oils is by using them to help my body get rid of toxins. I do this (and you can, too) by ingesting certain essential oils.
Some oil users and aromatherapists are against ingesting oils. And there’s a reason for this: Most oil companies do not have GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) essential oils, which are safe to use internally.
That’s why I only ingest Young Living’s Vitality oils which are GRAS certified and safe for internal use.
